School Nurse

Our Lady of the Holy Rosary School is fortunate to have a full-time school nurse, Mrs. Laurie Demalia. The nurse's office is located on the first floor of the school, opposite the main office. She can be contacted by phone at 978.632.5372 or at 978.632.8656, ext 4.

Health Topics

The seasonal flu and the H1N1 strain of influenza can cause serious illness. For information about seasonal flu, contact the Centers for Disease Control at 800.232.2522, or visit the CDC website for the flu. For information about the H1N1 strain of flu, visit the CDC's H1N1 site, and see the Worcester Diocese's response guidelines.

Common ailments like frostbite, strep throat, or tonsillitis require immediate attention. In the event that your child contracts one of these, please visit the previous links for more information, and consult a physician.

Chronic problems like allergies and asthma can require ongoing treatment. Be sure to consult a physician if you believe your child suffers from either. In the event that your child suffers from a chronic condition, or if s/he must take daily medication, be sure to visit the health forms section of this page to download the appropriate paperwork. Be sure, as well, to file the paperwork with the school nurse, Mrs. Laurie DeMalia.

Absence and Sick Leave Policy

If your child has been unable to sleep due to discomfort, presents with flu symptoms, cold symptoms, or fever, s/he should rest at home.  If your child has a fever, rash, or pain of unknown origin, s/he should also rest at home.  If symptoms continue, s/he should be evaluated by a physician.  The school nurse is required to dismiss any child who may expose others to infection.

The guidelines for how long your child must stay at home if s/he has a particular ailment are as follows:

Chicken Pox 5 days after onset of rash, or when all lesions are dry
Diarrhea If containing blood or mucus, or if uncontrollable, causing incontinence
Head Lice For 24 hours after treatment has begun
Hepatitis A 1 week after onset of illness, or as directed by the Department of Health
Impetigo 24 hours after treatment is begun
Measles 4 days after rash appears
Mouth Sores If saliva or exudate is excessive
Mumps 9 days after onset of swollen glands
Pertussis 5 days after antibiotics have begun
Pinworm 24 hours after treatment has begun
Contagious Pinkeye 24 hours after treatment
Rash Until diagnosed as non-contagious
Ringworm Until treatment has begun
Rubella 7 days after rash appears
Scabies Until treatment has been completed
Strep Throat 24 hours after treatment begun, and 24 hour with no fever
